bumble bee nails

These nails have been in my head for a while now.  So many ideas, so little time!  But I’m glad I finally had the chance to make them happen.  Plus, I’m on a yellow kick since my group of Beauty Buffs posted about yellow yesterday.

I’m wearing Sinful Colors Pull Over then I did some bundle monster stamping in konad black polish on a few of the nails.  I used BM-422 for the full-nail honeycomb look, and I used BM-401 for my busy little bees.  I used OPI When Monkeys Fly! to add some glitter to a few of my nails too. The gold glitters sorta remind me of the chambers in beehives too. I actually applied the glitter under one of my stamps too to see what it looks like.  Here’s a close-up:

I’ve never tried glitter under nail stamping before.  I just did it on one nail per hand.  But I quite like it!

My next post will be some hot pink nails with rhinestones accents for DIAMOND week of our April Linkup.  I hope the pics come out good because I just love how my blingy nails are lookin.  See ya then!

#TheBeautyBuffs – my favorite yellows!

Welcome to another Wednesday with The Beauty Buffs! We are discussing YELLOW this week.  I’m always on a quest to find some yellows that don’t need a zillion coats… and today I’ll share my findings with you.  I’m showcasing my top three yellow two-coaters!

thebeautybuffsNow I know that yellow is not a fave among nail bloggers. The formulas can be disappointing and a lot of ladies find yellow unflattering with their skintone.  But, I happen to love yellow! This stems from my childhood where one year the Easter Bunny gave me two Revlon polishes.  (The bunny never gave me candy.  So sad.  Yet I wonder why I have food issues.)  So one year my easter basket contained two cream polishes- a robin’s egg blue and a pale butter yellow.  I cherished them.  If I got peanut butter cups they’d be gone in two seconds flat.  But my nail polishes… they were the gift that kept giving!  I still remember the exact images of the bottles in my head.  I can’t remember my school teacher that year, but I remember my pastel Revlons.  Oh, Jacqui!!  Anyway, I think those nostalgic feelings about yellow polish carried into my adulthood.  Plus, my mom loves yellow polish and the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

I don’t know if one-coat yellows exist or not.  But for now, I’ll covet these three yellows which need only two coats each to be opaque:

my fave yellow nail polishes

First up is I Just Can’t Cope-Acabana by OPI.  We’ve all seen a lot of swatches of this one lately.  It’s the perfect true yellow- nice and bright and most similar to the primary yellow on the color wheel.  I thought the formula would be a little chalky since a couple of the other Brazil collection polishes were a wee bit chalky to me. But honestly, the formula is really nice for a yellow.  It dries glossy and you can’t go wrong with OPI !

Next I’ve got Pull Over by Sinful Colors.  This mustard shade has a touch of orange to it.  It’s similar to egg yolks, or a school bus.  I like that it’s a little different than your average yellow.  The formula is so fluid and juicy.  It has some jelly-esque qualities too it, but it’s opaque in two coats so it’s definitely not a jelly.  But it looks sorta glassy on the nail and I really enjoy the hue.

Sinful Pull Over Swatch

Last but not least is Inspire by AVON.  Remember when the 2013 Peter Som Trio came out by Zoya??  The collection contained a yellow, an orange and a mint?  Well AVON sorta copied them and came out with a trio of their own last year.  The AVON shades were darker, but still, very similar in concept.  I jumped on that train and picked up the AVON yellow called Inspire.  Wow, I love it.  How do I describe it?  It’s a bright yellow cream that has a tinge of green to it.  It’s almost a little bit pukey (especially in sunlight), but in the best way possible LOL!  It sorta has a 70’s retro feel to it.  The formula is really good and opaque (but as it ages I notice it’s getting a wee bit string-y).  I love how intense and opaque this yellow is, especially for nail art. I’ve used it tons and tons and now my bottle is getting low.  Good thing I have backup!  Surprisingly, Inspire is THE ONLY bottle in my entire stash that I own a backup of.  That says a lot I think.

AVON Inspire Swatch

My post wouldn’t be complete without a little yellow nail art…

I hand painted some blue triangles on the base of my nails using Orly Sweet Peacock.  I think the metallic blue really looks cool against my AVON Inspire.  I loved wearing this to work yesterday.  It’s simple but a little quirky and definitely bold.  I hope you like it!

After all this, if you still hate yellow-  oh well, I tried.  I look forward to hearing your opinions though!

Reeses Pieces Nails!

The theme for Nail Art Ideas Linkup this week is TREATS AND SWEETS.  This time of year I think of trick or treating- and aaaahhh those lovely little bite-size candy bars and single-serving packs of candy!!  When I was a kid I remember dumping out all my halloween candy on the floor and I’d gauge how successful the night was based on how many chocolate and peanut butter treats I had.  If I had 6 or more full-size peanut butter cups then I hit the motherload!!!  Throw a bunch of mini snickers on top of that and I’m in heaven.  Chocolate and peanut butter- I LOVE YOU.

Well, since I love PB so much I felt inspired to do some Reese’s Pieces nails!  Check me out!

reeses candy nail art

My cream-colored nails were easy to do- I made some some simple dots with a large dotting tool- hopefully the dots look like little Reese’s Pieces!  I also wanted to spell out the word REESE’S.  But I thought it would be hard to paint directly on my nails so I painted the word on a plastic baggy instead and made my own peel-off DIY decals.   Here’s an example of how I’ve done DIY decals in the past: Hunger Games Mockingjay Nails.  The word REESE’S came out kind of long and a bit too-stretched out to fit on one nail, so I had to snip the word into three segments.  This allowed me to span the word across three of my nails.  If you apply a decal like this on top of tacky or still-wet nail polish then it will stick pretty well.  Unfortunately I got some bubbles at the end when I applied my seche topcoat.  But it still looks cool and I guess the bubbles aren’t too noticeable.

1982 ET stickers and reeses

I also had to add this cute prop to my photo.  Reese’s Pieces were one of E.T.’s fave snacks in the movie, right?  Well, check out my authentic E.T. movie stickers from 1982!  It’s hard to believe that I held on to these for 31 years!  I’m only 36 right now so I’ve been in possession of these stickers most of my life.  Crazy, right?  Here’s a little movie trivia for you- I just read that the movie production company wanted E.T. to eat M&M’s instead, but the Mars brand turned them down on the free product placement.  Their second choice was Hershey’s… who said YES, of course.  That’s why E.T. was always munching on Hershey’s Reese’s Pieces.  Apparently, Reese’s Pieces sales skyrocketed after the movie was released!  Who woulda thought an alien would persuade us to eat more candy like that?

Nail Art Ideas Linkup- Games and Apps Theme!

aces_spades_cards_nails

The third them of September’s Nail Art Ideas Linkup (NAIL) is Games & Apps.  What a fun theme!  There were a lot of things swirling through my mind: Dance Dance Revolution, Ghost Radar, Zuma Blitz, Scrabble, Angry Birds… the list goes on and on!  But there is one card game that I’ve been playing obsessively lately and it’s a Nook app called Aces Spades made by Concrete Software, Inc.  I’m not dissing Barnes & Noble or the Nook, but most of my Nook apps are a wee bit lame.  But this Spades game is just too fun!  It’s a nice basic version of four-player Spades, it’s glitch-less, and I love the color scheme and ‘feel’ of the app.  It almost looks a little gothic.  Here’s a couple screen shots of the game so you can see what I mean.

I really like this blue, gold and purple color scheme.

For this nail art I’m wearing:

OPI Unfor-greta-bly Blue with some black sponged on top

♠ the yellow accents are Sinful Colors Pull Over with some Julie G Metallic Heels mixed in

♠ the purple accents were made with a magnetic polish called Houses of Parliament by Nails Inc.

spades_nail_art

I kinda love the trio of colors here!  And I’ve never used magnetic polish for an accent nail before.  I’m really happy with the result!  I’ll definitely have to try that again, especially since my big stash of magnetics are all sitting in a box unused!  So what do you think of my Spades nail art?  Did I capture the essence of this app at all?

Day 14 of OMD Challenge- Daisies

Day 14 of the Oh Mon Dieu Challenge is FLORAL. I usually think bright springy colors when I hear the word FLORAL… so I went the opposite way with this one.  Today’s manicure is a nice warm earthy daisy design!

daisy_nail_art

I started with a few base coats of a unnamed peachy color called Sally Hansen Maximum Growth Nourishing Nail Color from my SH french manicure kit.  Then I sponged some Garden Green by AVON on my tips.  Garden Green is such a spectacular polish- it’s a deep natural looking green with slight shimmer that makes it glow.  And it’s uber-opaque which makes it perfect for nail art.  In fact, some of my favorite polishes for nail art are from AVON.  I could do a whole post about a yellow called Inspire that I’ve used 7 times already on my blog (wonder if anyone noticed).  After all my tips were green, which looked pretty cool BTW, I dotted on some daisies using NYC French White Tip.  The center of the daisies was then dotted on using a mustard yellow called Pull Over by Sinful Colors.  I added some Revlon Quick Dry Top Coat et voila!  Earthy floral french mani with daisies!
