FAQ

Q:  WHO IS CRAFTYNAIL?

A:  I am 36 years old but I feel like I’m 25!  I’m happy-go-lucky and outgoing but my family and close friends get to see my moody side (lucky them).  I don’t have kids yet so I will continue to dote on my two cats- Aphrodite and Fergie.  I’m a financial aid administrator at a university.  I’m thrifty so coupons are my best friends- why pay full price?  I’m crafty and resourceful and I get a kick out of making something great out of ‘nothing’.  Also, I have the best boyfriend ever, and he is a truly amazing artist- check out JUSTINREEDART.COM.

Q:  WHEN/WHY DID YOU START BLOGGING?

A:  The Polish Aholic was the first blog that I got hooked on.  She got me a bit addicted to looking at swatches of new collections (the unveiling of new OPI collections is the best IMHO)!  Well, all the blog-reading and nail painting got the best of me so I started my own blog in 2012!

Q:  ARE YOUR NAILS REAL?

A:  Yes, they’re my real nails.  I’m more of a DIY-er I suppose since I’ve never tried acrylics or tips or anything like that.  I barely make it to the salon every 6 months to get my long hair cut!

Q:  WHAT ARE POINTY NAILS LIKE?

A:  Pointy nails work well for me since my nailbeds are very curved.  When I had square nails they didn’t feel that strong since the curved corners were always bumping into things and bending.  That made my nail polish chip too.  Now that I made them pointy I barely have to maintain them at all.  I file them quickly probably every two weeks, and basically just leave them alone.  They feel pretty strong in this shape and they are definitely less bendy.  My nail polish lasts longer without chips.

Q:  WHAT TOOLS AND PAINTS DO YOU USE FOR NAIL ART?

A:  I do all of my nail art with regular lacquers and nail polishes.  I very rarely use acrylic paint and I would specify in a post if I used paints instead. Here are the other tools that I use:

  • A set of dotting tools in various sizes to make perfect dotticures. From amazon.
  • DaVinci Nail Art Brushes.  I got a 4 pack from amazon which contains a detail brush, skinny brush, striper, and wide brush.
  • I use pure acetone for cleanup.
  • For nail art stamping I use a Konad metal scraper, Moyou large size squishy stamper, and various nail stamping plates from Konad, Moyou, Cheeky, Bundle Monster and MASH.

Q:  WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE NAIL POLISH BRAND?

A:  I love OPI.  I find them on sale at a beauty supply store near me.  Their collections knock my socks off, the formulas are great for nail art and I love the pro wide brush!  I feel like I can paint my nails with OPI so quick, like lickety-split because of that brush.

Another of my favorite brands?  AVON.  I get polishes on sale for usually $3.49 a piece, sometimes less.  My AVON lady drops them off right at my door.  Love it.  The formulas are great, the product lines are always changing and the brushes make application so easy.  If you’ve never tried AVON, you are missing out!

Q:  HOW OFTEN DO YOU CHANGE YOUR NAIL POLISH?

A:  I probably change my nail polish about 5 times per week.  Before I started blogging I changed my nails about once per week.  Back then I was on a mission to get my nail polish to last as long as possible.  Not sure why- but it was my personal goal to make my manis last as long as humanly possible!  But all the chips caused me distress!  I could never get my color to stay on as long as I wanted.  Now I don’t worry about it.  If it chips… I just change the color.  Variety is the spice of life!

Q:  HOW MANY BOTTLES OF NAIL POLISH ARE IN YOUR STASH?

A:  I did a quick inventory in January 2014 and I’d say that I have around 350 full-sized bottles.  I have lots of minis on top of that as well.  I have been lucky enough to receive a few mini sets of Sephora by OPI polish as gifts and that gives me the variety of colors that I need to make most of my nail designs come to life.
