This is my first Ruby Wing polish! This one is called Moonstone and it changes color under the sun’s UV rays.
Shown here is one base coat, two coats of Moonstone and one topcoat of seche. I had a few bald spots, I could’ve maybe went with three coats of this polish. But it was really late at night and I didn’t really feel like it at the time. I painted them and then went to bed… then I woke up with some serious shrinkage on the tips of my nails. It looked like big time tip wear. I guess this stuff really shrinks with seche vite? But how well does it change color? That’s the real question. I couldn’t wait to run out into the morning sun to check them out. It was overcast that day but Moonstone still performed well! My nails turned from a pale bright blue to a deep dusky purple. The next day I demonstrated this polish to my mom and she immediately had to borrow it. So, Moonstone is no longer in my possession! I’ll have to pick up another one of these. And here’s the kicker– the Ruby Wing sales display is only a minute from my office.
Today I have two Bobbie polishes for you which are made in the Philippines. The Nailinator sent quite a few to me in our swap, and so far I love them all (see the other one here). These are holographic, but not extreme linear-rainbow kinda holos. The effect is much more subtle, but still epically beautiful. I think they’re perfect for everyday wear.
Weng Weng is a grey holo with a purple duochrome effect. The formula is great. Shown here is a basecoat, and two coats of Weng Weng. Don’t you think the flash of violet makes it unique? I don’t own any polishes quite like this one.
Next up is Margarita. Maybe it’s named after a woman? Because the name makes me think yellow/green, not pink.
This one is much more sheer. This is one base coat plus four coats of Margarita and I still have some visible nail line. It didn’t seem to bother me though since the formula is very easy to apply and I really like the brush. I enjoyed wearing this polish more than I thought I would. The pink shade has such a romantic, soft, feminine feel to it.
After a day I added some gold studs to my Margarita mani. I love how the pink has a really warm tone to it and I think the gold studs really play off that. Here’s a shot with some photo editing, for fun. I also tested the waters with a new watermark. Not sure if I’m ready to make the switch though! Let’s see what my poll results say about my prospective fonts! What if I change my mind and decide to stick with my Katy Berry heart font? Will you still love me? Because I think I’m getting cold feet!
I got a new computer with Windows 8 and I feel like I have to re-learn how to use a computer. Except it’s a really dumb, really annoying computer that works funny! And since I feel like all my blogging techniques are changing with how I use my programs and stuff, I figured I could change my watermark font while I’m at it. I always say change is good, so why not? But, sometimes I have the hardest time making decisions. Especially when there’s too many options. Can you help me decide? I was able to narrow it down to 3 new fonts that I’m kinda fond of. I’m kind of leaning towards options A or B…. well wait, I dunno! Plz help! Whichever one you pick will be the new official font for Craftynail. The future of Crafty’s fonts is in your hands! But, no pressure!! hehe.
After a week I will make the switcheroo based on your poll results. Thanks in advance…
But so far, this is all I’ve come up with for 2014. It’s a french manicure with tiny colored eggs painted over top. Fingers crossed that you can tell that they’re eggs!
I started with a classic french mani that I free-handed. Then I stamped a green basket weave print over top using AVON Garden Green and my MASH-39 stamping plate. Then I made some bright easter eggs in pink, blue, purple and yellow using a dotting tool and a small brush. I did a sparkly coat of Wet n Wild Kaleidoscope on top and then some seche vite. I think my eggs would’ve looked more pronounced over a solid white background. This was kind of a waste of a nice french mani since you can’t even really see it! On the bright side, this got me in the easter mood! And it’s just in time for our week 3 theme for the April Nail Art Ideas Linkup.
Are you planning on doing some Easter nail art? If so, you should it add it to our inlinkz for the April Linkup >>
I was just featured on Polished PR’s blog. You should check it out! Especially if you are on the job market- because along side my teal glittery nails I’ve thrown in a job interviewing tip! Here it is at Jenn’s blog >> Craftynail’s JUST FOR ME MANI
And for fun, I recently made myself an original LOLCAT meme featuring my naughty little kitteh named Fergie. I may previously shown you a pic of her when I first caught her sitting on my boyfriend’s laptop. At the time, I thought it was devilishly cute, but lately, she has taken it to a whole other level. Recently she has been obsessed with sitting on the desktop tower and Justin’s laptop. Any chance she gets…. she’s so bad! So I made this little LOLCAT of her. What do you think?
Hey girly girls! I thought it would be cool to show you what nail art brushes I use! Before I got really big into nail art, I was befuddled by brushes. I honestly did not know what kind to get, where to get them, which ones to use for what, etc. Anytime a blogger wrote about brushes my ears perked up because I felt like they all knew this stuff and I was in the dark! I think at first I started using a little Sephora nail art brush that my sister got me for xmas. But then, as I tried more detailed work I realized I needed some more specialized brushes. That’s when I decided to buy adaVinci nail art brush set from amazon.
Da Vinci is a German brand and they’ve been around forever. Since they have a reputation for making high quality brushes, I figured I couldn’t go wrong with them. Although they specialize in artists brushes, they also carry an array of nail art brushes that are specifically designed to withstand acetone. Here’s their pdf catalog of nail brushes. I got my 4-pack set from amazon for around $25. I thought that was pricey… but I previously purchased some cheapo striper brushes from China and they sucked because the bristles got all splayed after one use, so I threw them away. These daVinci’s work much better. I was a little turned off from stripers though so I didn’t start using the striper in the da Vinci pack until just recently, but it works great. When I’m done with it I dip it in acetone to remove the polish, then I rinse it with water and the bristles stay together, not like the cheapo ones I used before where the bristles all stuck out like a wild hairdo. But, my most-used brushes in the set are the detail brush (for little detailed things) and the big brush is nice and stiff so I use it for cleanup around my cuticles. There is one brush in the set that I don’t really use much since it’s a little bigger than the detail brush. But, it’s handy to have lying around.
One technique I’ve been thinking about lately is one-stroke. Do I need a special one-stroke brush? I dunno! My mom is awesome at one-stroke, but she does big flowers, so none of her brushes would work for me. I figure a brush that is flat with a straight edge would work? I stopped by Michaels craft store and looked through the brush section. I found some that MIGHT work, not sure really. But they were $5 a piece. My mom noticed a sale sign that all the michael’s brand brushes were on sale for half off. So I found a multipack with 5 brushes that came to only $2.99. If the flat brushes in the pack don’t work, then I’m only out a few bucks! Some of the other brushes in the set looked useful for nail art too, so why not? Here’s what they look like….
Notice how the striper/liner brush has a few bristles that are bent back? That always happens to me. Always. How freakin annoying! They don’t usually bend back, and I have to cut them off. Even the high-quality da Vinci’s had a messed up brush like that- I contacted amazon and they sent me a new set. Does this always happen to you too? Is this common and I shouldn’t worry about it (it’s just somethin that happens), or is it grounds for returning/exchanging the product?
It took me around two hrs just to get the pics ready to post. Ughh- I have been having mega computer problems with the new desktop I bought. I purposely got windows 7 on it, even though at the time win8 was brand new. Well, that pc would not connect to the internet. It was so frustrating!!! We tried every troubleshooting thing possible, and even shipped the pc back to HP twice, yup, TWICE, and they kept sending it back unfixed. WTF! After arguing with them for months we finally got a newer desktop the other day, which works!!!!!!!!! Holy crap. The internet. Thank God. I feel bad, because I know they will probably re-furbish it and sell it to some other poor soul who will never be able to get it connected to the web either. Regardless, I’m glad that lemon is out of our hands. But now, I’m having a hell of a time adjusting to windows 8 on the new machine. Navigation is weird and I hate the whole app thing. Many programs try to open as apps and the functionality is limited and sucky. I know what I want to do, but don’t know what to click to make it happen. I had to watch a damn youtube video the other nite just to figure out how to shut the desktop down! Hopefully I can get the hang of it. If you have any windows 8 tips, please let me know!
Back to the nail art….I’m wearing a grey holo as my base color. It’s called Weng Weng from Bobbie brand- I will have to post swatches soon since it really deserves it’s own 5 minutes of fame. Then I made some diy birdcage decals using white konad polish and BM-407 stamping plate. I usually make my decals on plastic baggies, but this time I left the stamp right on my MoYou stamper, then colored the white birdcage in with a detail brush and Essie Butler Please. Then I covered the stamp with seche vite. It dried pretty quick, then I peeled it off the stamper and applied it to my grey nail. Awesome. I will definitely be doing this again. I feel a tutorial coming on. Some of my other nails are decorated with some blue rhinestones and one of my favorite glitter toppers- Lights Of Emerald City by OPI.
You should try a bird themed manicure too! Here are the other nails from the april linkup–
