Day 18 of Short and Sweet in Texas’ Nail Art Challenge is dedicated to Sugar Spun Nails! I have never tried this technique before so I’m glad I got the opportunity to try it out. I didn’t know the first thing about sugar spun so thankfully KatStaysPolished ‘s Youtube tutorial was there to help.
I went all out with this technique and pretty much covered my nails with the strands of polish. I figured, go big or go home! I used NYC Nail Enamel in Tudor City Teal as my base color. What a pretty teal! It seemed thin and to avoid having to use several coats I opted to use my Orly Ridge Filler as a basecoat. That way I only needed two coats of Tudor City Teal to be opaque. I used a dotting tool and the following coordinating colors to create my spun sugar strands:
Sally Hansen ♥ Mellow Yellow
Sally Hansen ♥ Lime Lights
Sally Hansen ♥ Marine Scene
The funny thing is, I have two bottles of Sally Hansen Mellow Yellow and one is a basic yellow cream, and the other is a sheer yellowish green shimmer. How did I end up with two bottles of them, and why do they look so different? I used the greenish one for this design since it coordinated best with my other 2 shimmers. I took photos without a topcoat… then applied a topcoat on a few nails which morphed the design and made it look all squished. So for me, this nail art worked best without a topcoat. I also applied elmer’s (white glue) around my nails before I started- so cleanup was a breeze. I peeled the white glue off and there wasn’t much mess to clean. I’m really happy with that glue idea, since I always try to avoid messy nail art or cuticles.
Sugar spun is a fun and interesting look, but it’s probably not my fave. I do want to try it again around Halloween though. This technique would probably work well for mummy nail art! If I paint a few eyeballs and use white polish for my strands I bet I could make my nails look like cute lil mummy faces!
I asked my boyfriend what he thought and he said ‘whoa, they look like balls of yarn’. LOL. What do you think of sugar spun nails? You can view the other girls’ nails by clicking this inlinkz.
These look great! I actually ended up liking the technique and the effect a lot more than I expected. I totally agree with your boyfriend – it always looks more like thread/yarn to me. Maybe sometime to keep in mine for inspired by fashion….
I don’t know about you, but I kept banging my nails on stuff while I was trying to do this! and I got some smudges…. but I just put more strands over top of it
One of my attempts ended with my nail stuck to a piece of plastic and the spun was all smushed. I was really careful with my half nail and it tried without any damage *phew*
I’ve never heard of this mani before but it looks cool! I’d constantly be picking at the raised parts though.
Also, that glue tip is so useful! I’ll try that when water marbling 😀
yeah- it was fun to peel the glue off too lol
Ya know… I’m wondering if the glue will work when dunked in water? If I get my nails wet while the glue is drying- they turn opaque again and then I hafta wait longer for them to dry. hmmm
Hmm…interesting! I’ll have to experiment, for science! 😀
This is awesome! Great job girl! Think i need to give this technique a try too 🙂
Thanks! Glad you like it! It’s like textured nails- to the extreme lol
cute! they do look like yarn! haha 😛
LOL thanks!
i have the sally hansen mellow yellow as well and I have the yellowish green shimmer one. When I try to look it up on line I find it brings me to the yellow one. How did you get your globs so thick?
Yeah- those two colors are totally different! Makes no sense.
I blobbed the polish down and stirred it a lot and waited about 20 minutes before I started using it- so it was pretty thick by then.
maybe it was the polish that I was using I will have to try different ones out
Yeah- i think it may have to do with the polish. I wanted skinny strands… but I couldn’t get them skinny no matter how hard I tried.
You did a great job!!
Mummy? It sounds super fun!!!
Thanks! Too bad I can’t start Halloween nails now. Or maybe I can? Lol
Jacqui these are great! I get what your boyfriend means-they really do look like balls of yarn! I love the colours you have used, brilliant.
Thanks Amy!
Haven’t seen this kind of nail art before, but it really looks great and I want to give it a try! What your boyfriend said regarding this is really true, it looks like a pile of yarn but still it a creative one and it looks good on you.
Thanks Marie- glad you like it!!
It was’nt my fave too. I still feel a bit weird with my sugar spun nails.
Yeah- it’s a fun novelty look. But not great for everyday wear !
me dan muchas ganas de ver el paso a paso… porq me las quiero hacer!
